Imagine: you’ve splurged tickets for a date night with that someone special, got dressed up, and took an Uber ready to enjoy a beautiful lantern display at Kings Park— only to discover upon arriving that you’ve been scammed.

This is the exact reality some WA residents face, as Consumer Protections issues a warning over fake event advertisements spreading like fire on social media.

The sponsored advertisements promote ‘sky lantern events’, where attendees release paper lanterns into the sky at Kings Park or Langley Park — however both parks state no such event has been scheduled or approved.

The social media posts encourage WA locals to purchase event tickets for around $50 via a fake website, where it will prompt individuals to enter personal details and pay via credit card.
