A very special surprise was in store for a Cambridgeshire RAF veteran celebrating his 100th birthday. Desmond Mead marked the occasion with friends and family joining a party at the Hauxton Centre.
Mr Mead of Church Road, Hauxton, had earlier received a congratulations card from the King and Queen and a personal handwritten letter of thanks from Sir Rich Knighton, Chief of the Air Staff.
And he was thrilled when the Station Commander from RAF Wyton, Wing Commander John Grenville, made an unexpected appearance at his party.
The pair discussed their common love of rugby and the Commander presented Desmond with the Station Ensign from the day of the celebration and an invitation to the station mess.
