Atlético Madrid midfielder Johnny Cardoso will miss his side's Champions League opener at Liverpool on Wednesday.
The La Liga club left the American out of its traveling squad after he suffered an ankle injury in training on Monday. It did not elaborate on the severity of the injury.
Cardoso is one of several Atlético players who will miss the trip to Anfield with injury, joining Julián Alvarez, Álex Baena, Thiago Almada and José María Giménez.
The U.S. men's national team midfielder joined Atlético in the offseason from Real Betis, moving in a deal worth a reported €30 million plus €2m in possible bonuses.
Cardoso started Atlético's first three league matches, with the Rojiblancos stumbling to one defeat and two draws. The 23-year-old was an unused sub over the weekend as his side secured its first win of the season against Villarreal.
The midfielder made his USMNT debut in 2020 and has gone on to earn 22 caps. He was part of the USMNT's Gold Cup roster this summer, but made just two substitute appearances in the tournament while battling an injury.
Cardoso was not called into the USMNT's most recent squad for friendlies against South Korea and Japan earlier this month.
