I remember driving to work on Sept. 11, 2001, and hearing that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. As the day continued the full impact became clear. Images of the plane hitting the building, people jumping from the windows, and the buildings collapsing stay with you forever.
There was one brief glimmer of light after this attack. For a little while everyone seemed to be nicer to each other. Drivers were less aggressive, and people seemed to be more patient and kinder to each other. It was a rare moment, everyone recognizing that we were united as a country, as humans.
