The retiring Senate Democrat says both sides have gone “too far” in demonizing opponents and urges a unified front against political violence.
Following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk , Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) has made a notable appeal for de-escalation in the nation’s political discourse, saying Democrats have also gone too far in their rhetoric.
In an appearance on “CNN News Central,” Durbin stated that the “outrage coming from both sides is unacceptable” and that the loss of Kirk should serve as a wake-up call for both parties to unite against political violence.
Durbin, who is retiring after three decades in the Senate, was asked if Democrats , and not just Republicans, have contributed to the problem of “demonizing the other side.”
