Luggage is transfered from a Spirit Airlines plane at Atlantic City International Airport, located in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, on Thursday, July 10, 2025. Spirit Airlines is to begin offering nonstops flights from Atlantic City International Airport to Miami starting in August.

WASHINGTON - The pilots of Spirit Airlines flight 1300 received several warnings from air traffic controllers to move their aircraft away from Air Force One, which was carrying President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and others to the United Kingdom.

The Spirit flight was traveling from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Boston, Massachusetts. The warnings were given as the aircraft was flying over New York.

Audio captured by liveatc.net and posted by various social media accounts revealed the exchange. "Spirit 1300, turn 20 degrees right," air traffic controllers were heard saying.

"Pay attention, Spirit 1300, turn 20 degrees right. Spirit 1300, turn 20 degrees right now. Spirit wings 1300 turn 20 degrees right, immediately," the controller added.

After the pilots acknowledged the transmission, a controller said, "Pay attention. Spirit 1300 traffic off your left wing by six mi-- or eight miles, 747. I'm sure you can see who it is. Keep an eye out for him — he's white and blue."

The Federal Aviation Administration acknowledged the incident in a statement, and said that no regulations appear to have been broken.

"The FAA is aware of social media posts about Air Force One and a Spirit Airlines flight in Boston airspace on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Required separation was maintained between the aircraft," the statement said.

Spirit Airlines said the flight landed safely in Boston without further incident.

"Spirit Airlines flight 1300 (FLL-BOS) followed procedures and Air Traffic Control (ATC) instructions while en route to Boston (BOS) and landed uneventfully at BOS," the airline said in a statement to USA TODAY. "Safety is always our top priority."

Trump traveled to the United Kingdom where he is expected to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, King Charles III and Queen Camilla, among others.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, special envoy Steve Witkoff, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller are some of the White House officials who have joined Trump on this trip.
