City staff in St. Catharines, Ont., are looking into potential recommendations to improve pedestrian safety around community centres following the July 31 death of a child outside the Kiwanis Aquatic Centre.

At a Sept. 8 council meeting, councillors Kevin Townsend (Ward 3) and Jackie Lindal (Ward 1) requested staff review and report back with recommendations on recreational facilities that could benefit from adding additional safety measures "including, but not limited to bollards."

Councillors requested the review include an assessment of the types of bollards and associated costs at each facility.

The City of St. Catharines did not respond to questions from CBC Hamilton about when the report is expected, or whether there have already been any changes outside the Kiwanis Aquatic Centre
