ROOSEVELT, N.Y. (News 12 Long Island) - In New York, a high school senior’s path to graduation was cut short after he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents just weeks before the ceremony.
The teenager came to the United States from Guatemala as an unaccompanied minor.
“You feel completely helpless in situations like this,” said Roosevelt High School teacher Jessica Harrison.
Weeks before his graduation, Alvaro Castro Velasquez was taken into custody by ICE, according to his attorney.
He is now being held in Texas.
“There’s only so much that we can do, but it’s heartbreaking,” Harrison said.
Harrison said Velasquez was respectful and caring and looked out for her during a difficult pregnancy.
