IRMO, S.C. (WOLO)– There is a new permanent reminder of a Midlands champion of civil rights.

Tuesday, September 17, the Town of Irmo unveiled a historical marker honoring the life of Judge Harold Boulware.

Judge Boulware rose to prominence as chief attorney for the South Carolina NAACP in 1941.

His most significant case was Briggs v. Elliott which he filed and served as local counsel with Thurgood Marshall and Robert Carter.

This pivotal school desegregation lawsuit ultimately became Brown versus the Board of Education.

The lawsuit is the most celebrated civil rights case in American history.
