Southern wants to be a better team than it has shown to be so far.

Coach Terrence Graves' team is unsatisfied with its 1-3 start to the season, especially the 30-7 home-opening loss to Alabama State on Sept. 6. The lopsided results have led to changes, most notably making quarterbacks coach Fred McNair the new co-offensive coordinator and play-caller.

Despite the 56-7 loss to Fresno State , an FBS opponent, last week, there were brief stints on offense and defense that were glimmers of the success Southern is capable of having entering Southwestern Athletic Conference play, starting with its game against Jackson State at 6 p.m. Sept. 27 at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Through the first quarter of the regular season, Southern has seen some individual players prosper even in tough games.
