A 21-year-old man was arrested on Sunday following a dangerous incident on Highway 401 in Halton Hills. Police released a dashcam video showing a black sedan traveling the wrong way down the highway. The vehicle was seen speeding east in the westbound lanes near James Snow Parkway around 6 p.m.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the driver side-swiped several cars and narrowly avoided collisions with others. The situation escalated when the sedan crashed into a light post. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt noted that other drivers had to take evasive actions to avoid accidents.
After the crash, the driver exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. However, he was apprehended shortly afterward. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
“This is not something you would expect to see on the highway,” Schmidt said. He emphasized the quick reactions required from other drivers during the chaotic situation.
The Toronto resident faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving, failure to remain at the scene, and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. Schmidt remarked, “This shocking video could’ve easily resulted in a fatal collision. It could’ve resulted in a tragic outcome.”
