A stretch of highway in New Jersey was closed Monday night due to an unusually nutty problem.

Bags of peanut M&Ms were spilled along Interstate 80 after a tractor-trailer hauling boxes of the chocolate candy crashed into another tractor-trailer that was parked at the side of the road.

Area firefighters said in a social media update that crews were dispatched to the scene of the crash at approximately 10:15 p.m.

The collision occurred 95 kilometres west of Newark.

“A single tractor-trailer was parked on the westbound shoulder near the 2.4 mile marker,” the Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue wrote on Facebook.

“Another westbound tractor-trailer, carrying a full load of M&M candy, rear-ended the parked vehicle tearing open both box trailers and spilling cargo over the roadway.”
