(WNDU) - Indiana Gov. Mike Braun is ordering flags in Starke, Pulaski, Porter, Jasper and White counties to be flown at half-staff effective immediately in honor of former Knox mayor and state senator Nancy Dembowski.

Dembowski died on Monday at the age of 91.

She had a long career in public service, serving as mayor of Knox for 10 years before becoming a state senator for the 5th District from 2002-2004 and a state representative for the 17th District from 2006-2012.

Prior to serving those roles, she worked for our reporting partners at WKVI in Knox for 25 years.

Flags should be flown at half-staff through sunset on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Gov. Braun is also asking businesses and residents in the counties mentioned above to lower their flags to half-staff in memory of Dembowski.
