The city of Greenville, South Carolina, will pursue criminal charges against drivers who damage parking gates in city garages, with fines and potential felony charges.
Starting immediately, the city will pursue criminal charges against drivers who intentionally break or lift gates to avoid payment.
Greenville parking staff reported more than 100 gate breaks in 2025, with an incident happening at least once a week.
Officials said all garages are equipped with license plate readers and surveillance cameras, allowing staff to identify the owners of the vehicles.
The fine for damaging the gate is $150. Criminal charges depend on the amount of damage caused.
