Two people, including a 29-year-old San Jose man, died in a head-on crash in the Central Valley Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 11:15 p.m. on State Route 59, south of Washington Road, in Merced County, the CHP said. Both drivers – Tyler Alexander Jackson of San Jose and Susana Esquivel, 28, of Atwater – died at the scene. No one else was in the vehicles.

The CHP said a preliminary investigation determined that Esquivel was driving south on State Route 59 when, for unknown reasons, she crossed into the northbound lane and hit Jackson's vehicle head-on.

The crash is under investigation.
