For the first time this year, a non-football athlete has landed on our Athlete of the Week list, a welcome change to bring attention to the many different fall sports that are held during the beginning of the school year.

Cibola cross country runner Caius Lastra, the 2024 Yuma Sun/Yuma Rotary Club Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, had an incredibly successful seven days last week, winning two events and setting a course record.

Lastra started out his week with a win in a Yuma meet at West Wetlands against Kofa and Somerton on Wednesday. Pacing the familiar trails of the park in which he excelled in the West Wetlands Invitational just days before, Lastra cruised to an easy overall victory with a time of 18:43, also contributing to the Cibola team win. He took first by over 30 seconds
