YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. — A 77-year-old Yuma resident died Tuesday night after he was fatally shot by Yuma County Sheriff's Office deputies.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m., deputies responded to reports of an individual firing a gun outside his residence and allegedly making statements of self-harm, according to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office.
Upon arrival, deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation but the man allegedly failed to obey commands to drop his weapon. The individual then allegedly discharged the firearm and was subsequently shot by deputies.
The man was transported to a hospital and later died. YCSO has identified the deceased subject as Lewis Berne.
No deputies were injured during the incident.
