TIVERTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Tiverton Police Department said officials were able to “safely” detonate an explosive device after it was found at a residence on Tuesday.

Officers responded to a home on Riverside Drive around 10 a.m. after receiving reports of an explosive device that was discovered inside a garage.

At the scene, Tiverton police said officers located a 3 and 3/4-inch solid projectile.

Police evacuated residents in the area and requested assistance from the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Explosives Operations Division and the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit.

After conducting an X-ray, officials identified the device as an armor-piercing shell.

The device was taken to an off-site location, where it was “detonated without further incident,” Tiverton police said
