YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — A man is dead after being shot by Yuma County sheriff’s deputies in Yuma on Tuesday evening.

Deputies were called to a home in the area of South Avenue 12 E and 36th Place on a report of a man firing a gun outside and making suicidal statements, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO).

The man, later identified as Lewis Berne, 77, of Yuma, reportedly didn’t listen to deputies’ commands and repeatedly stepped in and out of the house while holding a handgun.

He refused to drop his weapon after several commands and fired his gun before being shot by deputies, authorities said.

Deputies performed first aid, and Berne was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
