Officer David Jewell’s patrol car sits outside the Edgewater Police Department. Covered in flowers and handwritten notes, it has become a growing memorial and a powerful reminder of the life lost.

Jewell was off duty when he was shot and killed earlier this week at a Circle K in Ormond-by-the-Sea. Deputies say the suspect, a store clerk, used a gun he purchased just hours earlier to fire 24 rounds at Jewell in less than a minute.

Now, the focus has shifted to the family he leaves behind, including his wife and 17-year-old son. And the city of Edgewater is stepping up.
