Statesville police officers and federal agents are investigating after a doll was found hanging above a political sign at an intersection on Monday.

The Statesville Police Department received a report about the doll shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The caller reported the doll as suspicious activity, Statesville police said in a news release.

The doll, which was wearing a dirty lace dress and had matted blonde hair, was found hanging above an election sign for Statesville City Councilwoman Doris Allison. The sign was at the intersection of Wilson Lee Boulevard and Fayetteville Avenue, Statesville police said.

Responding officers spoke with the property owner next to the intersection. The property owner said the doll had a rope around its neck and was hanging from a street sign.
