MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- New York City Mayor Adams has announced his support for banning horse-drawn carriages in Central Park, asking for lawmakers to pass legislation to replace the carriages with electric alternatives.

"We have started taking steps to ban the horse carriage industry in the City of New York. We think it's a humane thing to do. We saw so many incidents where horses were running free, horses were dying in the street; we are better than that as a city," said Adams.

Adams announced he has taken the first steps by signing Executive Order 56 that will strengthen oversight and enforcement over the horse carriage industry until the City Council passes Ryder’s Law.
