Why did your ancestors leave their home and travel to a specific area?
If your ancestors moved west after 1863, they may have moved because of the Homestead Act that was signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862. The act gave 160 acres of free federal land to each adult. The requirements were that the person had to be at least 21 years old, never borne arms against the United States, lived on the homestead land for five years, cultivated 10 acres, built a home and fences, and paid the $18 registration fee. ×
