CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland Fire Chief Anthony Luke is on paid leave for reposting a political cartoon about Charlie Kirk — setting off a local firestorm of debate about whether public servants still have the right to speak as citizens in a moment when America keeps answering violence with vengeance.

In announcing Luke’s suspension , Mayor Justin Bibb called the cartoon – depicting elephants bowing before a golden assault rifle on an altar, with bodies strewn around it -- “insensitive and incendiary.” He also characterized the post as something that “romanticizes gun violence,” a description that puzzled the podcast hosts.
