JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) - The Johnson County Sheriff has announced that he sees no path forward for a joint law enforcement facility with Iowa City.
Sheriff Brad Kunkel has alerted the county supervisors about his decision change and it could have big implications for replacing the county jail.
In his letter to the board, Sheriff Kunkel said, “When we started down the exploration of a joint facility, we did so for three overarching reasons: location, voter approval threshold, and meeting critical infrastructure needs of both entities.”
Building a joint Iowa City police department, county jail and sheriff’s headquarters made financial sense to a number of leaders. It would save taxpayers $10 million dollars by building one building instead of two.
