UPDATE: The Chattanooga Police Department announced K9 Diesel died on Wednesday from injuries sustained during a recent SWAT security sweep.

Diesel, a 3-year-old German Shepherd, underwent emergency surgery on September 15, but his injuries left him with a diminished quality of life. After consultations with veterinarians, the department made the decision to humanely euthanize him on September 17.

Assistant Chief Rusty Morrison said Diesel served with “loyalty and courage,” and his loss is deeply felt by his handler, Officer Paul Winkelman, the K9 Unit, and the entire department.
