U.S. immigration officials have repeatedly held detainees longer than 12 hours in their South Portland facility, city officials said Wednesday, a violation of its conditional land use approval that could put the facility on track to be closed.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building on South Macadam Avenue has been a flashpoint of protests for years. Most recently , demonstrators have been camped out and protesting outside the facility for more than three months.
