PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - The St. Joseph Cemetery in Peoria had a case of vandalism, with four headstones damaged.
That’s according to Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins, who said he arrived at the cemetery just before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning to find the broken headstones.
He said an employee showed him the headstones, which appeared to have been pushed over with visible damage.
The employee told 25News the headstones dated back to the 1900s, making the process of finding relatives harder than usual, as family members would be expected to pay for replacement headstones. They told Watkins that they believed the headstones were vandalized over the weekend.
The cemetery didn’t have cameras to capture the incident, but the employee believes it will cost about $2500 for labor and equipm
