A bid to open a Times Square casino by rapper Jay-Z's Roc Nation has been thwarted by a state board. On Wednesday, the board rejected the gaming facility proposal for 1515 Broadway, which also involved Caesars' Entertainment and SL Green Realty. The six-member community advisory committee voted four to two against the proposal. "Go run and hide," SL Green CEO Marc Holliday railed afterwards at the four members who voted against the bid. "You have to live with that history forever." The rejection marked a victory for the Broadway League of theatre owners, which spearheaded opposition from the Manhattan West Side residents via the No Times Square Casino Coalition. "Most residents of the area we heard from are opposed, said former Manhattan assemblyman Richard Gottfried. "The Broadway theatre industry is adamantly opposed, and they make a strong case that a casino in this area would do major damage to that gem." "There are lots of other places in the city where a casino could thrive," Gottfried concluded. The casino bid was backed by the Rev Al Sharpton's National Action Network, entertainers such as rapper Fat Joe, and various construction trade and other unions, who opined that the gaming hub would create jobs and ownership stake for minorities.
