Nexstar Media Group's decision to indefinitely yank Jimmy Kimmel's late-night comedy show on Wednesday sparked outrage among some political observers.
The decision to cancel Kimmel's show came just days after the comedian cracked a joke about conservative activist Charlie Kirk's killer, whom he speculated may have been part of the MAGA movement.
“Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located,” Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, said in a press release.
Political analysts and observers responded to the news on social media.
"Meanwhile, Fox News continues to employ people who called for the murder of homeless people," political commentator Brian Krassenstein posted on X. "This is so utterly pathetic."
"Comedy is now a crime," internet personality Brian Allen posted on X.
"Censorship is bull----," author Tara Dublin posted on X. "What are they going to replace Jimmy Kimmel with, Hitler’s Reichstag speech on an endless loop?"
"Brendan Carr more or less instructed the ABC affiliates to stop broadcasting Kimmel's show and threatened Disney's ability to broadcast ABC over the air," journalist Matthew Zeitlin posted on X.
"This is legit scary but it’s also the product of a paper thin administration that’s going to collapse under its own vanity," civil rights lawyer Joshua Erlich posted on Bluesky.
"This is insane. Once again, Kimmel didn't even say what Carr accused him of saying," writer Mike Masnick posted on Bluesky.
"The Free Speech President has now pulled two of the three major late night hosts off the air through threats and intimidation because of their jokes," Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion, posted on Bluesky. "Obviously I’m behind Jimmy Kimmel 100% in the face of this fascist garbage. Speech against this admin isn’t just being chilled, they’re freezing it."
