New Jersey has become the latest state to allow human composting after death — a concept pitched as an environmentally friendly alternative to burial or cremation that involves turning loved ones into soil that can nurture new life.

Just the term "human composting" can cause some people to do a double take right away. It's a relatively new idea and states are now beginning to legalize it, including New Jersey on Monday.

"They explained it to me and I was like — OK, the most important takeaway is it gives everybody another dignified avenue to take of their loved one's remains," said Hudson County Assemblyman Julio Marenco, who championed the bill. "In New Jersey, we are one of the biggest markets available to them.
