LEANDER, Texas — District leaders in one of Central Texas' fastest-growing cities may be getting ready to close some schools.
Leander ISD is facing a multimillion-dollar shortfall and is now considering three options to consolidate schools or cut jobs.
District staff presented their official recommendation Thursday evening on how to move forward. The Board of Trustees is expected to make a final decision on Oct. 9.
In February, the district announced a $34 million budget deficit , largely due to fluctuating enrollment trends that have left some elementary schools under-enrolled. The district has already eliminated 200 positions and cut programs, like International Baccalaureate, but Leander ISD Superintendent Dr. Bruce Gearing said a $16 million gap still remains.
