[JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa] — The Johnson County Sheriff has withdrawn his support for a joint law enforcement facility with Iowa City, a decision that could reshape local infrastructure plans.
The Iowa City City Council voted to proceed with the facility's construction after receiving approval from the Board of Supervisors. A study indicated that this project could save the county $10 million.
Sheriff Brad Kunkel expressed his preference for a standalone sheriff's office and jail.
"I do not see a viable path forward for a joint facility and any support I had has ended," Kunkel said in a letter to the Board of Supervisors.
He emphasized the importance of the county's commitment to due diligence and good faith, noting the significant impact such decisions have on the community.
