ABC has suspended Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show indefinitely due to comments he made regarding the murder of Charlie Kirk. The decision was announced on Wednesday, following a statement from Nexstar Media, which operates numerous ABC-affiliated television stations. Nexstar indicated that it would preempt "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in its markets because of Kimmel's remarks.

Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar's broadcasting division, criticized Kimmel's comments as "offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse." He added that the remarks do not reflect the diverse opinions and values of the communities served by Nexstar's stations.

In his monologue on Monday, Kimmel discussed the aftermath of Kirk's death, stating, "We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it." He also commented on the White House's response, noting that flags were flown at half-staff, which he said received criticism. Kimmel remarked, "On a human level, you can see how hard the president is taking this," before showing a clip of President Trump responding to reporters.

Following Nexstar's announcement, ABC confirmed that Kimmel's show would be preempted indefinitely, but did not provide further details. A spokesperson for Kimmel did not respond to requests for comment.

The controversy surrounding Kimmel's remarks has drawn attention from various quarters, including FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, who criticized Kimmel's comments as "some of the sickest conduct possible." Carr suggested that the FCC could take action regarding Kimmel's conduct, stating, "These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead."

Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative commentator, was shot on September 10 during a speech at Utah Valley University. His suspected killer, Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested after being turned in by his father. Kimmel has faced backlash for his comments, which some view as politically charged, especially in the context of ongoing national discussions about violence and political rhetoric.
