VALLEY STREAM, Long Island (PIX11) -- A mother is in recovery after her 12-year-old son allegedly stabbed her twice with a kitchen knife, the Nassau County Police Department announced on Wednesday.

The incident happened around 9:20 p.m. at a residence in Valley Stream on Tuesday.

Police say the mother and son were engaged in a verbal argument when the son allegedly stabbed her twice in the chest.

The 48-year-old mother suffered a partially collapsed lung and was taken to a nearby hospital. Police say she is currently in stable condition.

The son was arrested and charged with assault in the first degree.
