OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - 5,000 coats -- that’s how many the Society of St. Vincent de Paul leaders say they need to keep our community warm this winter. Organizers believe that this year, donations might be lacking, as the need increases.

Ahead of the winter months, preparation is key when it comes to winter coat donations through St. Vincent de Paul.

“We used to do our coat giveaway in November but we saw people lining up for the giveaway at two o’clock in the morning with a blanket or just a sweatshirt on, and it was cold. So, doing them a little bit earlier we’re hoping people are prepared for that cold weather, and they don’t have to spend a week or two without,” said Jill Lynch-Sosa, their Executive Director.
