Three police officers were killed and two others wounded in a shooting Wednesday in rural southern Pennsylvania , authorities said.

The suspected shooter, who has not been identified, was shot dead by police at the scene in North Codorus Township , Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris said at a press conference.

The three deceased officers were members of the Northern York Regional Police Department , Philadelphia NBC affiliate WCAU reported. Another NYRPD officer and a York County Sheriff’s deputy were in critical but stable condition on Thursday evening.

“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and for the entire commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said from the hospital where the two officers were being treated.
