Owner Josh Harris called Wednesday a “historic day for D.C., the Commanders organization and our fans” after the Washington, D.C. Council gave its final seal of approval for a $3.7 billion deal that will bring the franchise back to the nation’s capital.
The 11-2 vote helped the stadium deal clear its final hurdle with the local legislature and sends the bill to Mayor Muriel Bowser for her signature.
The Commanders are planning on building a new stadium, aligned with a mixed-use development on the site of the old RFK Stadium, which was the franchise’s home from 1961 to 1996. 3
The team relocated to Landover, Maryland, playing in what is now known as Northwest Stadium since 1997.
Officials hope to open the new D.C. venue in 2030.
