“I think anything positive helps right now and anything that can save people a few dollars helps,” said councilman Scott Walker.

Starting October 1st, folks in unincorporated areas of the parish, like Metairie and Harvey, will see flood insurance premiums drop by 35 percent.

“A 35 percent discount is going to amount to about $12 million annually for the people of Jefferson parish, across the parish,” said Walker.

It’s all thanks to JP’s new “Class 3” rating from FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program. It’s the first of its kind in Louisiana, and one of only 11 in the entire country. The parish was previously at a “Class 5” on the scale of 1 through 10. That scale measure
