HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu’s interim police chief, Rade Vanic, wants to start a pilot program that would result in law enforcement officers being on campus in some schools.

Vanic made the announcement at Wednesday’s meeting of the Honolulu Police Comission.

Kaimuki, Kapolei and Waianae high schools would be under the watch of the school resource officers.

“Officers would actually be embedded in the schools and working with school administrators. So they’ll be actually assigned to a school,” said Honolulu police Maj. Brandon Nakasato.

Because HPD already has about 460 officer vacancies, the department is looking to hire retired officers on temporary 89-day contracts.
