MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA ) - Ice hockey will return to the Port City a quarter century after the Mysticks left town, officials announced Wednesday.

It’s been no secret the Mayor Sandy Stimpson has been targeting the sport in conjunction with a nearly 10,000-seat arena under construction at the site of the former Civic Center downtown. On Wednesday, city officials confirmed that a plan is in place.

“Professional hockey is coming back to Mobile, and it’s coming back in a big way,” Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said.

The minor league Mysticks arrived in Mobile in 1995 and built an enthusiastic core of fans. But as the novelty wore off and crowds waned, the team left for the Atlanta suburbs before the 2003-04 season.
