DETROIT – The Tigers have spaced out the workload for rookie Troy Melton this month, so much so, it begged the question: Is he on some kind of restriction – be it innings or pitches or both.

Not exactly.

“We’re paying attention to his rest after he has a three-inning outing,” manager AJ Hinch said.

His four outings this month have been spaced out by six days twice and three days twice. He’s not thrown more than three innings or more than 44 pitches.

“It’s just a matter of rest after he pitches,” Hinch said. “We can pitch him when he’s fully rested and ready to go. The reaction after he pitches (how long he will need to be down) will depend on how much he pitches.”
