(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back at every day in ‘This Day In History.’

On this date in 1793, President George Washington laid the cornerstone of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

The building is the home of the legislative branch of the government.

In 1790, Congress passed the Residence Act, giving President Washington the power to select a permanent home for the federal government.

Then, the following year, he chose what would become the District of Columbia from land provided by Maryland and Virginia.

The Capitol took almost a century to complete.
