Whitley County Commissioner Chad Banks died the evening of Sept. 17, his brother, U.S. Sen. Jim Banks , announced.

"Our family is devastated," Jim Banks wrote in a social media post Sept. 17. "Chad was a devoted husband and father to six children, a proud U.S. Air Force veteran, and a dedicated public servant. Please keep his wife Sarah, their children, my parents and extended family in your prayers."

Chad Banks had served as a commissioner since 2017 , where he prioritized infrastructure, reducing recidivism by addressing addiction and expanding broadband access.

His death drew condolences from his fellow commissioners, state officials and members of Indiana's congressional delegation.

The cause of death is currently unknown.
