Lionel Messi appears set to end his career as an Inter Miami player.

According to multiple reports, the Argentina superstar has agreed to a new multi-year contract with the MLS side.

Per USA TODAY Sports, Messi's deal will run through the 2027 season. He would be 40 by the time his new contract expires.

Messi signed a two-and-a-half year contract when he joined Inter Miami midway through the 2023 season, with that deal expiring at the end of 2025.

Inter Miami has made it a priority to re-sign the 38-year-old, who is still one of the top players in MLS and a regular with the Argentina national team.

Messi has 28 goals and 14 assists in all competitions with Inter Miami this season, which comes after he was named the MLS MVP in 2024.

The longtime Barcelona star has led Inter Miami to the 2023 Leagues Cup as well as the 2024 Supporters' Shield, when the Herons set the all-time MLS record for points in the regular season.

Miami fell short in the postseason last year, and the club currently sits in sixth place in the Eastern Conference as Messi chases his first MLS Cup. The Herons are eight points back of first-place Philadelphia, but do have three games in hand.

Inter Miami will move into brand-new Miami Freedom Park in 2026. In an interview with ESPN this summer, Herons owner Jorge Mas said that having Messi present to inaugurate the new stadium was imperative.

"I previously said that my wish, my dream would be for the number 10 to inaugurate our new stadium in March," Mas said. "This is a decision that rests on Messi. We wish for Messi to finish his career here.

"I said a few months ago that we should have news in the summer about that but hopefully it will be as soon as possible."
