Notre Dame made the College Football Playoff championship game last season behind quarterback Riley Leonard .

Turns out the Fighting Irish could have the quarterback who beat them in the title game.

In an interview this week, Will Howard said he was on the verge of committing to Notre Dame when he learned Notre Dame had signed Leonard, who had previously played at Duke.

"I thought I was going to end up at Notre Dame," said Howard, who had played four years at Kansas State before entering the transfer portal. "They ended up signing Riley (Leonard) just before I was about to commit."

Fast forward to Jan. 20, 2025, and the national championship game. Howard was more than ready to go. Looking for a free mini puzzle? Play the USA TODAY Quick Cross now. ND insider: Marcus Freema
