Police in Guelph are warning people to stay alert after a woman in the south end had a chain worth $6,000 stolen off her neck.

It happened Wednesday morning near Goodwin Drive and Laughland Lane around 11 a.m.

Police say a woman in her 60s was out for a walk when she was approached by a couple who engaged her in conversation.

"These strangers ... asked her where she was from and talked about language and other things. And then at the end of the interaction, one or both of them gave her a hug," Guelph police spokesperson Scott Tracey told CBC News. They also gave her $20.

It's believed that while the hug was happening, one of the suspects removed the gold chain the victim was wearing and replaced it with a fake one, Tracey said
