Two people were rescued after a hit-and-run crash plunged their car into a canal in Martin County, and deputies are being praised for the dramatic save caught on video.

The victims were going eastbound on Martin Highway (714) when they were hit by another car on Sept. 12, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office. That driver left the scene.

"The impact forced their vehicle off the road and into a deep, water-filled embankment where it became fully submerged with both occupants trapped inside," authorities said.

The victims were able to call 911, but the connection was lost before they could tell dispatch exactly where they were.

The sheriff's office said Deputies Matt Fritchie and Juan Pepper-Orelliana were able to get to the general area, but could not see the car from the road
