When JP Bergeron wrote “Old Guys in Bed,” he didn’t intend to shock or provoke viewers. He wanted to tell a story seldom represented on screen, even in LGBTQ+ films: a romance between two older gay men with the same physical intimacy, emotional honesty and complexities as films featuring younger couples.
For Bergeron, that representation is a driving force. Even though there have been older gay characters portrayed by heterosexual actors on shows such as "Grace and Frankie" by actors Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, John Lithgow and Alfred Molina in the 2014 film "Love Is Strange," Christopher Plummer in the 2010 film "Beginners" and others.
