When the Red Sox fly to Tampa for this weekend’s series against the Tampa Bay Rays, Wilyer Abreu will not be on the plane with them.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced that the injured outfielder will stay home in Boston to run through one more round of workouts on Friday. If all goes well, he could potentially fly down to Tampa separately and join the team over the weekend.

“He’s going to run the bases, he’s feeling a lot better,” Cora said. “If everything goes well he’ll fly to Tampa and we’ll decide when he’ll be active.”

Abreu has missed the last 27 games since going down with a right calf strain on Aug. 17 against the Miami Marlins, and what was originally expected to a days-long absence has now stretched to over a month.
